11 There are two commonly suggested / recommended methods of laying external porcelain tiles. 1. Full Wet Bed This method is where the porcelain tiles are placed onto a levelled out bed of 6:1 / 4:1 sand & cement mortar, prepared to a wet consistency. This mortar should be placed over a prepared sub base of compressed MOT Type 1 material, usually at 75mm- 10mm thickness. Use a bond bridge primer on the underside of every flag before laying. This will ensure superior bond to the wet bed. The bond bridge can be made using liquid SBR & OPC cement. 2. Traditional System This method is similar to laying internal floor tiles inside a property. The porcelain tiles are fixed to a 75-100mm concrete slab base using an external grade tile adhesive. Again, use a bond bridge primer underneath the tiles to ensure a superior bond. For jointing there is an option of using a narrow joint two- part epoxy resin that are on the market, this will give you a quick clean finish. We would highly recommend you seek advice from a professional contractor regarding the installation & finishing or porcelain tiles. Adhesive method for paving with vehicular traffic, commercial and industrial sites, garage access, etc. Advantages: • Withstands high traffic stress. • Does not absorb stains; easy to clean, even with a pressure hose. Characteristics of Bearing Supports or Plots Advantages: • Fixed plots: from 12 to 20mm in height. • Height adjustable plots: from 25 to 100mm in height. • Self-levelling plots: from 37.5 to 100mm. Can compensate for slopes up to 5%. • We recommended using a fifth central plot for better load distribution. • Installing raised paving over 1000mm high is not recommended. For greater height, we recommend a personalised study by a project planner. One solution could be applying a fibreglass mesh on the bottom of the tile or a glued steel sheet.
